ADAS, which stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, is a technology that is being added to later model cars, which is designed to enhance safety and improve driving comfort. It includes a range of features that use sensors and/or cameras together with software to help the driver in various driving situations. The systems include:

  • Lane Departure Warning:  LDW uses sensors and cameras to watch your car's position in its lane. If it sees you drifting out and you have not used the indicator, it warns you by sounding an alarm or rattling the steering wheel

  • Lane Keeping: An addition to LDW, Lane Keeping nudges the steering to guide the car back into the lane, helping prevent accidents. It can sometimes get it wrong though so on narrow country roads you may need to turn it off as I have experienced it trying to guide me into the hedge!

  • Distance Control: ADAS keeps an eye on the distance between your car and the one in front. It adjusts your speed to maintain a safe gap, reducing the chance of rear-end collisions and making driving smoother.

  • Collision Avoidance: With advanced sensors, ADAS can spot potential crashes ahead. If it senses danger, it can hit the brakes to stop your car fast, helping avoid accidents or lessen their impact.

  • Blind Spot Monitoring: ADAS checks the spots around your car that you can't see. If another vehicle is there, it warns you, making it safer to change lanes without accidentally hitting another car.

  • Parking Assistance: Using sensors and controls, ADAS helps you park more easily. It guides your car into parking spots

  • Traffic Sign Recognition: ADAS can read and understand road signs like speed limits and stop signs. It tells you what they say, helping you stay aware of important information while driving.

Advanced doesn't always equal safer though, as this American research round-up video shows that when drivers feel they have technology helping them, they often drive faster and feel less engaged with the driving so tend to get distracted easier
