I take it you have checked fuses F7 and F16?

the keys are coded access. but if you can't get comms with engine ECU then you will not be able to code the key.

If fuse are OK, as a quick test  check and see what you have at the 16 pin plug, do you have a DLC break out box?

Regards Darren

Thanks for the response no I dont have a break out box but I will check out whats happening at the 16 pin plug

Is a 2004 Focus different then. As i coded blue keys into one the other day. And i was presented with both types of login.

Coded and timed. This was using IDS

Ok managed to borrow an autodiagnos which managed to read the ecu which said "battery saver relay coil short circuit" managed to clear that, however I could not get into the instrument cluster menu.

I also noticed that the mileage has disappeared, so I wonder if the instrument cluster is at fault ?

Also all the fuses are fine

On instrument cluster check pins

17 = bat voltage
3 and 13 ign on bat voltage
18 = earth

My mothers car is a 03 Focus and when i coded in keys for it i had a choice of coded or timed access but then i've had a 2001 transit and it was coded access only.

Might that not be because the Focus launched in 1998, the Transit in 2000, when coded access was about to start.

Fair enough but i think its just pot luck as to what it will be.  A 51 plate Transit at work now which is timed access.

I suppose really the best idea is to suspect anything after 2000 year may well be coded access so plug in and see 1st, at least this way you can advise customer what's needed etc and hopefully they'll leave car with you to sort out.

This is how i try to do it anyhow.
