have in a Fiat Ulysee 2.0 16v petrol with a non working fuel gauge, the instrument cluster is a digital type so is there any manual test procedure as my diagnostic tool (Texa) doesn't list any instrument cluster for this year/model.

The fuel light seems to come on when ignition is switched on and then goes out after a few seconds and we think the light works as it should because the owner added more fuel when the light was on (about £30) and the light went out but gauge didn't move.

I'm fairly sure its an instrument cluster fault but can a 2nd hand unit be used or is it a coded part.

thanks

I've had the instrument cluster repaired and i'm now not sure if the cluster has been repaired correctly.  Before nothing happened with the gauge other than the fuel light functioned but now when you 1st switch igniton on the fuel gauge sweeps to 3/4 level then eventually drops right back to below empty and fuel light doesn't illuminate.

Does the fuel tank sender unit have a low resistance when full or a high resistance.  I've measured the resistance of the sender unit and i'm reading 283 ohms which to me would indicate a good current flow so gauge should read a fair amount of fuel in tank.

Can anyone provide some info on fuel sender unit resistance readings.  Its a tank out job to remove sender unit.

thanks
