NOT QUITE !!!

318 2.0 petrol 2002. Camshaft displacement bank 1

It's a minor infringement, but the rules allow all users of the forum to keep track of posts and makes it easier when searching the archives. Many regulars will not reply to incorrect posts.

Do you have a fault code number on your scan ?   Which scanner did you use ?

Fault code was 28BB am surprised no p codes is this code a  manufacturer code? , Am using a kts 670 started the car this morning for the first time and found an alarming rattling noise!i decided to pull off the rocker cover and inspect, I found the chain guides had broken up and were missing causing the chain to slacken and the timing to jump a tooth or two Shocked am guessing the fault code are relating to the fact that the timing is out!Is this a common thing on these BMW's what causes the guides to break? Ordered lots of new parts today am in two mind about the chain has it streached might be worth while replacing that too? what does everyone think? Looks like am going to have fun fishing all the bits of broken guides out the sump Cheesy Cheesy.

change the chain, tensioner, guide, and bottom sprocket. oh and do not attempt fitting bits without timing tools. if you aint done one before a quick tip is not to fit the pin for the crankshaft instead a dial gauge to get cyl 1 to tdc. well you can fit the pin if you really want to but you might be there a while Thumbs Up

Boss ordered new timing tools today after i told him his idea of marking everything with tippex was not the best idea he's ever had Grin. Ive noticed the chain looks fun to change how does it come out past the crank? Does the crank split once the crankshaft bolt is removed? am going to get stuck into it tomorrow as the timing is out anyways I'll just set it up before i rebuild it! Thanks for the help everyone so far  Smiley Smiley

Hi,
done loads of these, never replaced a chain yet or sprockets,i just replace the top guide rail and the modified tensioner, but most of the ones i,ve done have been sub 60k.The first one i did, i still service and its done nearly 150k now.
Ast timing kits are cheap now at £260 and i believe sykes are similar price. I paid nearly £500 from bmw for mine ,but no-one else did them 5 years ago.
The crank locking tool is a sod to get in, don,t remove the inlet manifold, just bend a correct size bar in a "S" shape and you will save yourself hours!
