Not sure if this is same set up as 2000 model. but does this have a multifunction control module behind fuse box at drivers side below column area, if so does the cluster loose power when touching any wiring going to fusebox. had one recently for non start and control module on rear of fusebox wasnt getting proper connection to fusebox.

Removed fusebox and used a pin to tighten connections and car started and no loss of cluster power when touching any wiring etc.

But as said not sure if same set up.

This early Punto will have a key reader under the dash near the column. The key code has to match or the immo light (red key) will stay on. I have matched a few but you have to have a virgin ecu and the 5 digit pin code. You can fit an ecu without the immo function (earlier type) and it will run ok. The pickup ring can fail and the ecu can get rom error problems also. Other problems with wiring can happen as mentioned becuse the ecu is vulnerable under the bonnet!
