Hi,
I have done a head gasket on a mx5 recently which had been cooked severely by the customer!
It also needed the piston rings replacing due to the heat,
it is now all back together running fine appart from it seems as though the valve  stem oil seals are letting by because in the morning it bellows out smoke for about five minutes and the same in the afternoon after she finishes work.
The colour is more white than blue but it does smell of oil,
also the levels for both are fine and the levels do not seem to be going down at all,
and obviously i did replace the valve stem oil seals with new ones when i did the over heating job.
Have i missed something obvious?
Regards Simon

White smoke is usually water/coolant simon. There could be a number of reasons for that. Is the head gasket a one-way fitting type?

Pull the spark plugs out.

The condition/colour of the electrodes tell a thousand stories.

simon.

It may not be the same with yours but we had a nissan a while back that had got very hot and the owner and his mate had replaced the head gasket - I am not sure if they did anything with the rings -and that car did something similar - smoke on start-up.

That turned out to be the bores had gone shiney and the rings were leaking untill it got going.

perhaps something to think about.

Vicky.

When the rings were replaced were the cylinders de-glazed?
